There is clear evidence that providing high-quality CPR significantly improves cardiac resuscitation outcomes.
There are two major components of the physical skills of CPR, acquisition and retention. All too frequently emphasis is placed on acquisition while retention, which is of equal importance, is ignored. A classic example of this can be found in those credentialing agencies who issue a 2 year card Basic Life Support when, according to OSHA 3317-06N 2006, "numerous studies have shown a retention rate of only 6-12 months for these critical skills." Therefore, what at first glance appears to be advantageous, is in reality a fundamental flaw. Further, these same credentialing agencies have cut the certification of First Aid skills to 2 years instead of 3 even though they are not nearly as time-sensitive or skill-intensive.
